Eben Rust was born in Zambia in 1954. He started school in Ndola and attended ten schools in total before matriculating at Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool in Pretoria. In 1973 he enrolled for a BSc in Civil Engineering at The University of Pretoria and thereafter completed a PhD from the University of Surrey, United Kingdom, in 1997. He started his career in geotechnical consulting at Van Niekerk, Kleyn & Edwards but soon found his way back to The University of Pretoria and started teaching soil mechanics.
Eben’s special interests are geotechnical instrumentation and related electronics. He combined this with his knowledge of geotechnical engineering to develop 
instrumentation for in-situ soil testing. He has published extensively on this and related topics.
He is the founder of Osimo South Africa that specialises in cone penetration testing and instrumentation.
